Sony FX30 vs FX2: Comparison Guide

Cutting to the chase here- I think the FX2 will put the FX30 out of business. I’m confused by the release of the FX2 because of how close it is to the FX30… it’s just a tiny bit better where I don’t know why you’d purchase the FX30 anymore…then again I’d probably get the FX30 ONLY so I don’t have that annoying viewfinder in my way.

I think that these are both really good starter cameras, but if you’re seriously looking to start a career in filmmaking and videography know that at some point you will have to upgrade to the FX3 or higher.

If you're in the market for a compact, powerful camera that delivers cinematic footage without the size or price tag of a full-frame cinema rig, chances are you’ve come across the Sony FX30 or Sony FX2. While these cameras are aimed at different audiences, they’re often compared by creators looking for great image quality and flexible video options.

So which one is right for you? Let’s take a look at the key differences - and why base ISO might be one of the most important factors to consider.

FX2 vs FX30

Why Base ISO Matters

Base ISO refers to the native sensitivity of your camera’s sensor. When a camera has dual base ISO, it means it has two levels where image quality is optimized with the least amount of noise. The FX2 has a higher second base ISO of 4,000, while the FX30 sits at 2,500. This alone makes the FX2 the right choice for film makers deciding between these two cameras. I promise you that most of you reading this will be using that higher ISO unless you’re shooting on sets with lighting control for every shoot. For us docu-style/run and gun shooters - this isn’t possibly and that higher ISO is useful.

This means the FX2 is going to perform better in low-light situations without needing to boost ISO artificially. If you're shooting in darker environments or want more flexibility with your ND filters outdoors, that extra ISO performance can make a huge difference.

Who the FX30 Is Best For

The FX30 is a great tool for:

  • Entry-level filmmakers looking for a compact camera that does not have an annoying viewfinder in their way.

  • Honestly… I’m not sure what else to say here because I think that the FX2 out preforms the FX30 in just about every way now.

Its Super 35 sensor is no dealbreaker, especially for content creators, wedding filmmakers, or YouTubers who don’t always need full-frame depth of field.

This is what the viewfinder looks like on the FX2. I think I would find it getting in the way a lot.

Who the FX2 Is Best For

The FX2 shines when:

  • You want a true hybrid camera with excellent photo and video capabilities

  • You need high-resolution stills and good 4K video

  • Low-light performance is a priority thanks to the 4,000 base ISO

  • You prefer a camera with a built-in electronic viewfinder for more accurate framing in bright conditions

If you're a photographer who’s venturing into video or need a camera that does both jobs well—this is a killer pick.

Our Final Take

The FX30 is an amazing entry into Sony’s cinema line and gives you pro-level video at an unbeatable price. But the FX2 has the edge in stills and ISO flexibility, making it a more balanced option for hybrid shooters.

If base ISO performance and full-frame quality matter to you, go FX2. If you want cinematic video features and don’t need stills or full-frame, the FX30 is a steal.

Either way, both are great tools - it just depends on how you shoot. If you’re looking for a b camera to your FX3 or FX6 I would get the FX2.

  • The FX30 is a Super 35 (APS-C) sensor camera geared toward video creators, while the FX2 is a full-frame hybrid camera with better stills capabilities and a higher base ISO for low-light performance.

  • The FX2 is better in low light thanks to its higher dual base ISO of 800 and 4,000, compared to the FX30’s 800 and 2,500.

  • Yes, both cameras support an optional top handle with XLR ports. The FX30 supports the standard XLR handle unit, while the FX2 supports the newer XLR-H1 unit.
